Books, Community, and Real Ideas in Hoboken

A nonprofit bookstore at 510 Washington St where used books, puppet shows, and local events share the same roof.

About Us

Symposia Community Bookstore runs on a straightforward premise: books should be affordable, profits should stay local, and a storefront can do more than sell things. Rated 4.8 out of 5 across 119 reviews, this small Washington Street shop has earned that score by being genuinely useful. Volunteers staff the desk. Prices are kept low. When a customer arrives ten minutes before closing looking for a specific title, someone stays and helps.

The inventory skews used and curated. Sections cover fiction, nonfiction, children's titles, and local interest. Proceeds fund community programming, not a corporate margin. Birthday parties for children happen here. Puppet shows run on a ticketed basis; each child attending receives a free book. These are not incidental add-ons. They are the point.

Hoboken gets a bookstore that functions as a community center, an event venue, and an educational space simultaneously. The address is 510 Washington St. The model is nonprofit. The result is a room that earns its square footage.

What We Offer

Used book sales form the core inventory. Titles span adult fiction, nonfiction, children's literature, and reference. Prices are marked plainly. Stock rotates regularly.

Event hosting is available for children's birthday parties. The space accommodates small groups. The atmosphere is cozy and child-appropriate. Puppet shows run as scheduled ticketed events. Admission includes one free book per child. Community programming, author events, and educational gatherings use the same space. Symposia also accepts book donations, which replenish inventory and fund ongoing operations.

Volunteer staffing keeps overhead low. That cost structure is what allows proceeds to cycle back into the Hoboken community rather than outward.

"The place is small but super nice, especially the volunteers. I got there 10 min before closing and still the volunteer at the desk helped me a lot to try to find the book I was looking for. She tried her best and with great attitude! There are plenty of books inside and outside. Super recommended!"

"Love this place. Great books at good prices, with profits going to the community. If you have kids, they need to see the puppet shows. Theres a charge for the show, but kids get a free book at their first show. So fun being in the shop while the show is on."

"A charming little book store on the main drag in Hoboken, this shop has something for everyone. A nice mix of newer titles as well as unique and older books. Be sure to check out the bargain tables outside! If you're in the area, stop in and say hi, and support local businesses, especially this lovely independent book seller!!"

"Symposia is a very cute bookstore to volunteer! I've been volunteering there for 3 years now and the staff and Carmen are great to work with! I enjoy arranging the bookshelves and fixing puppet supplies. I also love the range of books they have (from nonfiction, fiction, YA, history, etc.) and for a really great deal! I would also check out their website for their online store to see if there are other books that are not in the store. Their puppet shows are also great for kids!"
